SPANISH LANGUAGE DAY at UT Faculty of World Studies
Spanish Language Day is recognized annually on April 23 and pays tribute to the author Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra. Around the world, there are over 400 million people who speak Spanish. It’s the second most spoken language in the world.
HISTORY
In 2010, the United Nations named six language days in recognition of the six official languages of the U.N. and to bring attention to the history, culture, and achievements of each of the languages. The U.N. selected April 23 for Spanish Language Day commemorating the celebrated Spanish author and poet, Miguel De Cervantes Saavedra. His magnificent novel, Don Quixote, has been translated into more than 60 languages. Spanish Language Day honors the day of Cervantes death on April 23, 1616.
On this occasion, a ceremony was held at the venue of Faculty of World Studies on 5th of May in the presence of the Ambassadors of Spain and Latin American countries, local officials, faculty members of Department of Latin American Studies, and students as well.
