University of Tehran and reconstruction of the earthquake-stricken areas of Sarpol-e Zahab
On Sunday November 12, 2017, at 18:18:16 UTC, (21:48:16 local time), a strong earthquake with Mw7.3 occurred in the border region between Iran and Iraq in vicinity of the Sarpol-e Zahab town. This earthquake was the largest seismic event after the M7.4, 1909 AD (1287 Shamsi) Sialkhor earthquake near the Borujerd city in the Zagros region.
Iranian Seismological Center (IRSC) reported the epicenter coordinates of the earthquake at 34.77 N and 45.76 E with a focal depth of 18.1 km. This earthquake had been recorded by 109 SSA-2 and CMG5TD strong motion stations of Iran Strong Motion Network (ISMN) in the western and central provinces. The maximum recorded acceleration (raw data) of this event was recorded at Sarpol-e Zahab station with acceleration of about 684 cm/s2.
After the earthquake, one of the first institutions involved in it was Semitic Center affiliated to Institute of Geophysics, University of Tehran . In fact, UT launched temporary and constant seismic stations in Kermanshah, Qasreshirin, Sonqor and Gilaneqarb and there are plans to launch stations in Nosud and Sumar as well.
On 7 January, 2018, President of UT in a meeting with housing authorities announced the readiness of UT to contribute in the process of reconstruction of the areas with earthquake damages.
UT and Islamic Revolution Housing Foundation signed a MoU on 23 January, 2018. Some of the contents of the MoU includs: to evaluate the damages resulting from the earthquake on environment area of urban and rural environments, to document the effects of earthquake, to assess the risk and seismic burden of cities and villages and to cooperate in operation on improvement and renovation of residential units.
Different teams from College of Engineering, Institute of Geophysics and Faculty of Social Sciences were stationed in the region and began their research, monitoring and executive programs.
In recent summer, Prof. Nili Ahmadabadi, President along with Prof. Rahimian, Vice President for Research Affairs and Prof. Bidhendi, Dean of Institute of Geophysics and some of the other faculty members paid a visit to the region.
Distinguished faculty members from the College of Engineering, Faculty of Social Sciences and Institute of Geophysics are constantly cooperating with UT projects on reconstruction of Sarpol-e Zahab.
