“Missouri S&T has a world-class research portfolio that is focused on solving grand societal challenges, and I am honored to serve in this position and support these efforts,” Ferdowsi says. “It is an exciting time for the College of Engineering and Computing, as I envision our research initiatives and impact around the globe will only continue to grow.”
Ferdowsi has served as interim associate dean since September 2022. He joined S&T in 2004 as a member of the electrical and computer engineering faculty and rose to the rank of full professor. Earlier this year, he was named S&T’s Schlumberger Endowed Professor in Electrical and Computer Engineering.
Ferdowsi holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology. He earned his master’s degree in electrical engineering from Sharif University of Technology in Tehran, Iran, and a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from the University of Tehran.
Some of his research interests include renewable energy resources, power electronics, electrification of the transportation industry, wide bandgap devices and microgrids.
From 2020-2022, he served as a program director for the National Science Foundation’s Division of Engineering Education and Centers. In 2007, he was awarded the foundation’s Faculty Early Career Development award for his work related to energy storage units for hybrid vehicles. He also serves as an associate editor for the IEEE Transactions on Power Electronics publication.
Dr. David Borrok, dean and vice provost of the College of Engineering and Computing, says he is confident in Ferdowsi’s abilities, and he looks forward to seeing how Ferdowsi will continue to expand the college’s research initiatives.
“Throughout his career, Dr. Ferdowsi has been a top researcher and leader in his field,” Borrok says. “He has done an outstanding job serving as interim dean for the past several months, and he is the right person to continue in this role on a permanent basis.”
