On Saturday April 16, 2016, the Faculty of Economics hosted a lecture by Mr. Martin Tlapa, the Deputy Minister for non-European countries and Economic Diplomacy at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic.

In his speech, Mr. Tlapa explained the reasons to support export and investment activities. Then citing Paul Krugman, he elaborated on possible harms that can result from competitiveness in international trade. He continued by talking about the recent economic diplomacy trends adopted by European countries and gave details on the performance of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Czech Republic in this regard. In the end he listed the opportunities they have found within the Iranian economy.

In response to a question regarding the barriers on the way of European investment in Iran to supply competitive goods in the global market, Mr. Tlapa referred to the remaining difficulties in using SWIFT for financial transactions. He considered inappropriate regulations as another barrier which can be overcome if Iran joins the WTO.

Responding to another question, he emphasized the importance of cooperation with Iran especially against threats such as ISIS and hoped that efforts by the European countries succeed in removing the remaining barriers on financial transactions.
