Art and the 4th Dimension, International Symposium on Conceptions of Time, Space and Movement in Art, 8-9 January, 2019

Shahid Avini Hall, College of Fine Arts, University of Tehran, Tehran, Iran

ABOUT ART & THE 4th DIMENSION

Since the development of Non-Euclidean geometries and Albert Einstein’s Special Theory of Relativity in 1905, the concept of higher dimensions, especially the fourth dimension became significant and helped inspire many artists of the twentieth century. Early Cubists, Surrealists, Futurists, and other artists took ideas from higher-dimensional mathematics and used them to advance alternative conceptions of time, space and movement in their work. For many, the fourth dimension is a complex concept that has come to represent “passing beyond the domain of practical certainty and of looking into the vast range of possibility.” (Charles Howard Hinton, 1884)

This symposium aims to elaborate important issues related to the different conceptions of TIME, SPACE and MOVEMENT in the arts. These primary concepts point towards other concepts such as REALITY, FORCE, FORMATION and the HIDDEN DIMENSIONS of art. All these concepts are open to interpretation, expansion and debate. The symposium is an interdisciplinary and international venue that brings together contributors from a wide variety of backgrounds and expertise. The two-day event will be divided into four sessions, each with its own speakers and panel of experts. Each session will have a theme related to one of the following subject areas: ARCHITECTURE & URBAN DESIGN, INDUSTRIAL DESIGN, VISUAL ARTS, PERFORMING ARTS & MUSIC. There will also be an exhibition of contributions from the call for papers. These contributions are not limited to papers or posters, but can also be audio-visual presentations, dynamic models or in any other medium that is relevant to the theme of the symposium.
