Education In Turkey
- A Glimpse at the system of Higher Education in Turkey
Thanks to the European Credit Transfer and Accumulation System (ECTS), which has been implemented in Turkish universities since 2001 as part of the Bologna Process, all students can continue their education in other countries and receive diplomas accepted by countries applying to ECTS.
Higher education in Turkey consists of universities with associate’s, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degree programs, faculties, institution, conservatories and vocational schools. In total, 206 of 129 universities are state universities, 77 are private and foundation universities. According to data recorded in recent years, the total number of university students in formal education and distance education in Turkey is about 7,5 million. - Admission Requirements For Undergradute Programs
The applicants who want to study in any undergraduate programs should make an application directly to the university. Each university accepts international students on the basis of their own requirements that are published on their official websites. - Admission Requirements For Graduate Programs
Graduate programs in Turkey contain master, PhD and specialization in medicine programs. which are carried out via institutions. - Documents Required From Applicants
Diploma and course contents of the previously completed degrees , letter of reference and statement of purpose are required in the application procedures of the graduate programs Students who graduated in Turkey must submit Graduate Entrance Exam’s (ALES) result in addition to the given documents, . English-medium universities can ask for additional exam results such as TOEFL, GRE or GMAT which have international validity. Each university and program may have different admission criteria. Therefore, those who wants to have graduate education has to apply directly to the institutions of the universities. - Master's Programs
Two types of master degrees as mastes with thesis and non-thesis programs are offered for students. Whereas master’s programs with thesis consist of at least seven courses, one seminar and a thesis study. non-thesis master programs contain at least ten courses and a semester project. The required period to complete the master degree is 2 years. - Doctorate Programs
Doctorate programs have at least seven courses, proficiency exam and a thesis. The period to complete the courses are four semesters at most and the period to finish the doctorate program is eight semesters. To be able to apply for doctorate programs, it is an obligation to have a master’s degree. The applicants can apply with their undergraduate diploma to the joint doctorate programs which consists of both master and doctorate education. - Specialization in Medicine Programs
Specialization in medicine programs are equivalent to doctorate programs and it is carried out by the faculty of the medicine of universities and by the research hospitals which are subject to the ministry of health. The students, who want to have an education in medicine and dentistry, must succeed in DUS or TUS exams. - Academic Calendar
Universities in Turkey run on a two semester system, known as fall and spring semesters. Some universities additionally have summer school programs. - Academic Examination Process
Academic performances at the universities are determined on success and attendance. Universities test students’ academic success with different examinations such as two midterm and one final or one midterm and one final. Some universities implement different different systems such as make-up exams or summer schools. In addition to exams, various homeworks and reports are efficient in taking grades. Passmarks in the universities are usually 60/100 (2.00/4.00) (These grades may differ among universities). - Language of Instruction
The applicants must prove their efficiency in the universities’ course language which is usually in Turkish (Also in English, French and German). The students, who are accepted to university but not able to get the efficiency in the required language, are given language course for a year. Also, Turkish lessons are given to international students.

Full-time programs
Full-time programs refer to full-time degree awards which include Bachelor’s, Master’s and Phd courses.

Undergraduate Scholarship Program is specifically designed for Bachelor’s degree applicants in designated courses from engineering to health sciences, humanities to social sciences.
- Programs offered in undergraduate level are provided in a guide which you can access in our website as well as during application in the application system.
- Almost all fields of education are offered except for two-year associate or vocational degrees .

Postgraduate Scholarship Program offers a wide range of programs across social sciences, humanities, natural sciences and engineering at Master’s and PhD levels.

Short-term programs
Short-term programs refer to short-term support provided for a specific niche areas and target groups.

Success Scholarship Program (1 year) is specifically designed for students who are currently studying in Turkish universities with their own finances and have shown exceptional academic performance.
- The program covers monthly stipend only.

Research Scholarship Program (3-12 months) : The program is designed to encourage international researchers and academicians to carry out collaborative academic research in their own fields with Turkish academicians in the most prestigious Turkish universities.

Turkish Language Programme for Public Officials and Academicians [KATİP] (8-10 months): This Program is designed for foreign public officials, diplomats, academicians and researchers who wish to learn Turkish and get closely familiar with Turke
- Applications of KATİP program are not open to public and are recieved through Turkish Embassies in the respective countries.

How To Apply
- Applications can only be made individually through www.turkiyeburslari.gov.tr by the candidates.
- There are no institutions or persons authorized to apply for Türkiye Scholarships.
- Candidates are strongly advised to carefully read the instructions and warnings in the application system.
- Applicants are required to submit and upload the necessary documents to the application system.
- Applications delivered by post, courier, or by hand will not be accepted.
- Applications are free of charge. Please do not entertain any third party institutions or persons who offer to make an application on behalf of you in exchange for a fee.
- Türkiye Scholarships include both scholarship and university placement at the same time. Applicants will be placed in a university and program among their 12 preferences which they choose in the application system
Required Documents
All candidates must submit the following documents during online application:
- A valid National Identification Document OR a valid Passport
- A recent Photo of the candidate (Please note that the photo you upload into the Application system must be a proper portrait of yourself, candidate photos which are not identifiable will undermine the evaluation of your application)
- National exam scores (required for candidates who do not possess any international qualification or certification)
- Diploma or temporary certificate of Graduation
- Academic transcripts (online screenshots and uncertified transcripts will undermine the evaluation of your application)
- International exam scores (GRE, GMAT, DELF, YDS, YÖS …etc. if required by the chosen university & program)
- Language test scores (if required by the chosen university & program)
- A research proposal and an example of your written work (for PhD applicants only)
Important Details:
- Most programs in Turkish universities are instructed in Turkish. However, some departments and universities offer programs in English or other languages. Candidates who wish to study in these programs need to have an internationally recognized language certificate to prove their language proficiency (TOEFL and other equivalent certificates). Most of these programs require international admission test scores such as GRE, GMAT, SAT etc. Candidates can check the language of instruction while selecting the programs in the application system.
- Undergraduate candidates who possess International qualifications such as SAT or GCSE instead of national exam scores, will need to provide the minimum required qualifications needed for completing secondary school according to these international exams.
- All Türkiye Scholarships awardees who do not possess C1 Level Certificate for Turkish Proficiency (including those who are placed into English or other language taught programs) must attend a 1-year Turkish Preparatory Course and attain the C1 Level Certificate by the end of their academic year.
Evaluation and Selection Porcess
Türkiye Scholarships applications are assessed on the basis of academic success, extra-curricular activities and other professional credentials of the candidate. In the evaluation process of the applications, candidates will be evaluated based on their eligibility to the application criteria of the program applied for as well as their academic and social achievements.
1. PRELIMINARY ASSESSMENT:
All applications are reviewed based on basic criteria such as minimum academic grades, age limit, required documents etc.
2. SHORTLISTING:
Applications of eligible candidates are carefully reviewed by Expert committees based on a broad set of criteria including academic standing, previous qualifications, academic interests, career goals, consistency of choices, clarity of letter of intent, participation in social activities …etc. After which a list of qualified candidates is shortlisted for interviews.
3. INTERVIEW:
The shortlisted candidates are interviewed in more than 100 countries by interview committees including academicians and experts.
Interviews usually last 15-30 minutes and are conducted in the following format:
- Welcome and introduction
- Document check
- Candidate’s motivation for applying
- Academic knowledge and career goals
- Ending and questions to the committee
Please note that the interview is not indicative of whether the candidate will be selected or not.
Note: Candidates who are selected for interviews must bring all transcripts, documents and certificates of each year they have studied if they have not graduated yet.
4. SELECTION:
Interview results of candidates nominated by the interview committees are evaluated by a selection committee and a list of candidates to be awarded a scholarship are formed. This final evaluation stage will assess the overall eligibility and suitability of the candidate for Türkiye Scholarships.
