University of Tehran has once again solidified its position among the world's top universities in the latest 2026 assessment

As the pioneer of Iran's presence in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), the University of Tehran has once again solidified its position among the world's top universities in the latest 2026 assessment.

The University of Tehran, leading Iran's representation in the prestigious Shanghai Ranking (ARWU), has once again secured its place among the top 1,000 universities globally in the latest 2026 assessment; ranking in the 501–600 band, it shares the highest position among Iranian universities with the Tehran University of Medical Sciences.

Top Performance in Terms of Internationally Recognized Publications
Furthermore, among the six Iranian universities included in the 2026 list, the University of Tehran, alongside Tehran University of Medical Sciences, has demonstrated the highest level of performance regarding the volume of internationally recognized publications and global impact.

This achievement underscores the fact that, ever since Iran’s initial entry into this ranking system in 2009, the University of Tehran has consistently served as the nation’s standard-bearer for science and research on the international stage.

For several consecutive years, the University of Tehran, together with Tehran University of Medical Sciences, has held the top national ranking and played a pivotal role in showcasing Iran’s scientific capabilities to the global community.

As the first Iranian university to enter the Shanghai Ranking in 2009, the University of Tehran has consistently played a pioneering and exemplary role for other universities in the country, paving the way for their entry and advancement.

Among the 55 universities from 10 Islamic nations included in this ranking, the University of Tehran stands as Iran’s prominent representative; by appearing alongside the region's leading institutions, it showcases the scientific capabilities of the Islamic Republic of Iran.

Although a decline in scores has been noted in certain metrics, such as the number of indexed papers and per capita performance, this should be viewed not as a sign of decline, but rather as an opportunity to re-evaluate and strengthen research infrastructure and to enhance faculty productivity.
